Restore Your Smile with Dental Implants in Burlington

There are many ways to replace one or more missing teeth, such as full or partial dentures and bridges. However, if you are in good health with healthy gums and enough bone matter in your jaw, you may be a good candidate for dental implants.

Basically, implants replace the extracted tooth, both root and crown, which encourages the natural bone to preserve its density and help stabilize it. Implants are usually single units, and therefore do not involve the neighbouring teeth. They are easier to maintain with regards to brushing and flossing and they do not decay. Our patients in Burlington receive dental implants when they have lost or damaged teeth but also a healthy jawbone and gums.

Multiple implants can also be utilized to fix loose, ill-fitting dentures, which in turn can enhance the denture wearer’s quality of life.

The Implant Process

First, we will take x-rays and carefully examine your teeth and oral health to determine if dental implants are right for you. Next, during the first stage of surgery, we will insert the dental implant via surgery into your jawbone underneath your gums, and then stitch it back in place. We will then wait for the tissues to heal and for the implant to bond, which may take several months.

In the second stage, we will attach an abutment to the bond. The abutment is a post-like structure that connects your replacement tooth to the bond. Next, an artificial tooth is formed and attached to the abutment. This can take several appointments.

Complications & Care

As with all medical procedures, getting dental implants may come with complications such as bleeding, infection, and numbness, though these are rare. Another rare complication is inability of the implant to bond with the jawbone. If you are concerned, please don’t hesitate to ask your dentist questions.

Implants look and act similarly to natural teeth, so you will need to brush and floss them. Your dentist will show you more detailed techniques on how to care for your implants, and you may require additional check-up appointments to ensure that they are functioning properly.
